It has been a busy week. I've spent the last few days helping someone make gates for their garden, somewhat hampered by a very loving guest labrador who no matter what I was doing somehow managed to tuck her head under my arm and nestle in... Not complaining, I appreciated the affection, but it is not easy to hammer nails into wood accurately when there are the world's silkiest ears tucked under your chin. I think she was born to be a therapy dog - she would be excellent at it.
Her affections were lost however on the resident greyhound who just found her irritating and needy, and expressed his displeasure at not being the sole centre of attention by lying down repeatedly in the middle of the gate we were making.
My early mornings and evenings have been taken up with spaniel walking for neighbours who were on holiday. I feel well exercised but rather glad my duties are now over and I can go back to my more meditative walks. Maybe even a photo or two.
While feeding the hedgehogs that frequent my neighbours' garden I went into the shed and found a baby rat sitting peacefully in the cat bowl, alive and well and looking as though he had volunteered himself for dinner. He was completely unafraid of me and I had to wait patiently for him to leave before I could top up the bowl with cat food!
I went back into their house and told the parrot about it... he just laughed and said, 'what?'
Not a huge fan of rats, but give me silky labrador ears any day.
