This isn't the post I'd planned, but events, or rather bees, have overtaken me...
I have a house full of swarming honey bees!
I've had lots of different bees nesting in my walls over the years but never honey bees, and certainly never any swarming in the house before. They're appearing from a small gap just at the top of the stairs and gathering on the landing. The buzzing noise is incredible if a little disconcerting! I wish you could hear them. There are hundreds up there and more emerging...
I'm writing this in my living room with several buzzing around me as there's no door to the stairs, but most of them are upstairs going in and out of the windows and flying around the landing. I can't currently get upstairs.
I've spoken to a local bee keeper who said that they are probably looking for the queen and when/if she appears she will either fly off and they will go with her, or she will settle in the house and they will cluster around her, in which case he can come and scoop them all up and re-home them in one of his hives in the next village.
I'm sort of hoping for the latter because I'd love to watch them all being scooped up, but I'll settle for them all disappearing, hopefully sometime soon before I want to go to bed (or use the bathroom!). I'm not sure what to do if neither of those happen. Thank goodness we're still in a heatwave because at least I could sleep outside. Just wishing I hadn't packed away the sleeping bag under my bed!
I'll keep you posted...
